How to access My Account:

  1. Click the My Account tab from the CourtLink top navigation menu.
  2. Select an appropriate tab: Account Profile, Preferences, My Billing, or User Administration (administrators only).

How to make changes to your account profile:

Change information pertaining to your account, including name, address, email address, password, etc. To enter or change information, click on the relevant field, (e.g. name), and enter data. When you are finished, click Save Changes.

Change settings for Search, Runner Documents, Track, Alerts, and Strategic Profiles.
For each area listed, you can set preferences for the following:

  • Search: Select when to be notified of search costs, display docket entries, and email address for notification of results.
  • Runner Documents: Select order instructions and delivery preferences.
  • Track: Select display options and email address for notification of results.
  • Alerts: Indicate email address for notification of results and default settings.
  • Strategic Profiles: Select chart display options.

Dockets and Documents

The Dockets & Documents tab within CourtLink allows you to obtain a history of all of the dockets and online documents that you have viewed, as well as check the status of any orders placed through the CourtLink Document Retrieval Service.

Online Arrived and Online Pending

View a list of all the dockets and online documents that you have viewed as well as those that you have requested or updated from CourtLink. To review the status of an online docket or document:

  1. Click the Dockets and Documents tab from the CourtLink top navigation menu.
  2. Click the Online Arrived tab to display the history of your docket and online documents for the past seven days.
    — Or —
    Click the Online Pending tab to display the status of dockets and online documents that have not yet arrived. Upon completion, this material is automatically delivered to Online Arrived.

Runner Orders

View the status and billing details for the orders you have placed through the CourtLink Document Retrieval Service.

To review the status of a runner document from the CourtLink Document Retrieval Service:

  1. Click the Dockets and Documents tab from the CourtLink top navigation menu.
  2. Click the Runner Orders tab to display your document retrieval runner requests and completed document retrieval order as well as billing details.

Strategic Profiles

    Understand whether the judge assigned to your case has substantial or limited experience in a particular area of law, and learn how the judge handled similar cases. Uncover the experience of your opposing counsel before the judge in particular matters.

Get a better handle on your firm’s share of total available business from a client and see trends within your prospect or client base.
  • Nature of Suit Profile
    View nature of suit trends and identify growth opportunities nationally. Compare trends on a court-by-court basis. Monitor case types that seem to be on the decline and flag emerging risk. Gain insight into market trends so that you can make the best business development and practice area expansion decisions.
  • U.S. District Court or State Court Profile
    Conduct geographic analysis and evaluate litigation trends by practice area. Compare nature of suit trends within a US District Court so you know what practice area to expand in.

How to create a new Strategic Profile:

  1. Click the Strategic Profile tab from the CourtLink top navigation menu. A history of previous Strategic Profiles is displayed automatically.
  2. Select a profile type by clicking on one of the five tabs next to History, e.g., Litigant.
  3. Select the Courts and Nature of Suits to be included in your profile by clicking on the Select Courts and the Select Nature of Suit links at the top of the page.
  4. Enter your profile criteria, including name(s), dates, client matter code (optional), chart type and reporting selections.
  5. To submit the profile, click Create Profile.

NOTE: On Litigant Strategic Profiles and Law Firm Strategic Profiles, if there is more than one company name variation, a list of available name variations displays automatically. To include alternative names, check the names you want to include in your profile, then click Create Profile. On Judicial Strategic Profiles, if more than one judge name appears you need to select the judge you want to run the profile on, then click Create Profile.

Change Strategic Profile Date Ranges—No Additional Charge

Rerun your Strategic Profile—with a different date range—at no additional cost for up to 24 hours after you enter the initial profile. Change Litigant Strategic Profile date ranges to gauge how a company’s litigation has changed over time and to assess trends.

To change a Strategic Profile date range:

  1. Click the Strategic Profiles tab from the CourtLink top navigation menu. A history of past profile searches is displayed automatically.
  2. Click Re-Run next to the name of the profile you want to change.
  3. When the profile displays, scroll to the bottom of the report. Edit the date range.
  4. Click Re-Run Profile.

Printing and Sharing Your Strategic Profile Reports:

Print, store and share individual profile reports or your profile history list.

  1. To print a profile:
    Click Print View at the top right of your report. Follow your standard PC printing instructions.
  2. To save a profile in PDF:
    Click PDF. Use the Save function to save the PDF to your PC.
  3. To e-mail a profile:
    Attach the saved PDF to your outgoing email message.
  4. To share a profile:
    Click the share link from the History tab.

My Courtlink

After logging into CourtLink, you will arrive on the My CourtLink page. This page links to all of the main CourtLink functions and displays recent activity in the five main application areas.

The My CourtLink page has been designed to function as your CourtLink work center. You can easily access your recent activity by clicking on an item in one of the lists. Below each list are links that enable you to start a new activity or view more of your recent activity. Next to each section title is an [info] link that provides additional information.

Near the top of your screen are tabs that will take you to the indicated product area. Below these tabs are system messages that alert you to events and new features.

At the very top of the page are five hyperlinks that allow you to quickly order a document, view a list of the courts we access, go to the main Lexis.com page, sign out or receive assistance. At the very bottom of the screen is information about CourtLink pricing, our commitment to your privacy and our Master Services Agreement.

Customizing this page: There are a couple of things that you can do to change the appearance of the My CourtLink page. Click on the link that says Customize This Page at the top of the page. You will see that you can rearrange any of the application sections to appear in any of the six regions. You can even hide sections that you don’t use (just select [None] from the drop down). Finally, for each section you display you can control the number of recent items you wish to view. CourtLink defaults the counts to 10 initially, but feel free to set these numbers to any count that is more helpful to you.

Track

Be among the first to know about new developments in existing cases. The advanced CourtLink® Track feature allows you to keep abreast of new developments in active Federal and state cases on a scheduled basis. You can effortlessly monitor new activity through pre-defined tracking profiles and receive automatic email notifications.

How to set up a Track:

  1. Click the Track tab from the CourtLink top navigation menu.
  2. Click the Track a Docket button.
  3. From the drop-down menus, select the Court System you want to search.
    • Under Court System, choose federal courts or a single state court system.
    • Under Court Type, select a specific court.
    • Under Online Court, select a specific jurisdiction.
  4. Enter the docket number. (Click the Formatting Rules link for details on docket number formats.)
  5. Under Scheduling Options select a frequency for notification of new activity: daily (or up to 3 times per day), selected weekdays, selected dates of a month, or only one time on a single date.
  6. Enter a client matter code (optional).
  7. Click the Save Track button.

How to view Track results:

You can access your Track results using one of the following methods:

Option 1: When cases meet your Track criteria, you will automatically receive email notification. Simply click on the link in your email.

Option 2: New Track results will be listed on the My CourtLink page, under the heading “Tracked Dockets.” Or, click the Track tab from the CourtLink top navigation menu. A list of your tracks will appear. Click on the case name to view results.

How to manage Track activity:

  1. Click the Track tab from the CourtLink top navigation menu.
  2. Click the Manage Tracks tab.
  3. Click the Case Name to edit the Track or click the checkboxes to designate those you wish to delete.
  4. Click the Remove Selected button to delete the selected items.

Search our unmatched database of current and historical litigation activity by name, case type or docket or patent number to uncover history and trends in cases of interest to you. CourtLink offers the following Search features:

  • Search:
    Search by varying criteria including litigant name, attorney or law firm, nature of suit, key word, etc. to locate dockets and documents of interest. Combine federal courts and available state courts for a more comprehensive search. Download a literature sheet now(PDF, 834K) .
  • Docket Number Search:
    Search by a particular Docket Number in federal or state court.
  • Patent Search:
    Search on a Patent number to get a list of cases involving that patent number. Download a literature sheet now (PDF, 329K).
  • CourtLink Document Finder:
    Search for the documents listed within the dockets that meet certain criteria for federal courts. Document Finder allows users to pinpoint the relevant work product of opposing counsel and key ruling info on the presiding judge. Download a literature sheet now (PDF, 390K).

How to use the Search Feature:

  1. Click the Search tab from the CourtLink top navigation menu.
  2. Select one of four Search Tools:
    • Search: Search by judge or attorney name, keyword, jurisdiction, litigant name, etc.
    • Docket Number: Search by docket number.
    • Patent Search: Search by patent number or search by court for patent-related cases.
    • Document Finder: Locate federal district court documents of interest.

Search:

  1. Click the Search tab. Then, click the red Search button.
  2. Select the court(s) for your search by checking the boxes to the left of the state or court name and then click Next.
  3. Enter your search criteria in the fields provided and then click Next. (Note: You may want to click the Other Search Criteria link to access additional search options.) Click Next.
  4. Review your search criteria and add your client matter number or project notes (optional). To complete your Search, click on the red Run Search button.

Docket Number:

  1. Click the Search tab. Then, click the red Docket Number button.
  2. From the drop-down menus, select the Court System you want to search.
    • Under Court System, choose federal courts or a single state court system.
    • Under Court Type, select a specific court.
    • Under Online Court or Runner Court, select a specific jurisdiction.
  3. Enter the docket number. (Click the Formatting Rules link for details on docket number formats.) Enter a client matter code (optional). Click Next.
  4. If you have selected a Runner Court, you will need to select a delivery method.
  5. Review your Search Summary. To complete your search, click Submit Search.

Patent Search:

  1. Click the Search tab. Then, click the red Patent Search button.
  2. Enter a patent number or U.S. Class/Subclass to find cases related to that patent OR select a U.S. District Court to display the patent cases from that court. Enter a client matter code (optional). Click Next.
  3. Review your Search Summary. To submit your request, click Submit Search.

Document Finder Search:

  1. Click Search from the CourtLink top navigation menu.
  2. Click the red Document Finder button.
  3. Select up to 5 courts, up to 5 natures of suit, and document type.
    • You may also enter additional criteria such as party name and/or date range to further narrow your search.
  4. Click Next. Verify your criteria and click Submit Search.

How to view Search results:

New Search results will be listed on the My CourtLink page, under the heading “Recent Searches.” Click on a search name to view the results for that search. You may also view Search results from search history within Search.

  • To view a docket, click the docket number.
  • To customize your search results list, click Customize List. Hide/display columns. Sort by court, litigant, active/closed. Click Save to save your customized list settings.
  • To save your search criteria for future use, click Save Search.
